letting the soul flow into the sheetrock

Tonight I sang in my garage for a good 10 minutes after leaving my car.. With nothing on the walls, singing sounds especially crisp.

It has been too long, I used to break out singing all the time at home.. Perhaps because my roommates are out of town since I've been back in town i'm more free to let my voice carry.

Singing is, for me, a method of expression.. experiencing lyrics and musicality is known to be more moving than just one alone.. but producing the music using your voice (the only natural instrument) takes it one step farther.. Perhaps it gets me in touch with what's deeper and more meaningful in myself and in humanity

Tonight the song I sang was, to me, a prayer... lacking enough theology so I could connect to it without reservation. Some of the lyrics I was blasting were:

Every day is a bank account
And time is our currency
So nobody's rich, nobody's poor
We get 24 hours each
So how are you gonna spend
Will you invest, or squander
Try to get ahead
Or help someone who's under

Teach us to count the days
Teach us to make the days count
Lead us in better ways
That somehow our soul's forgot
Life means so much
Life means so much
Life means so much

Has anybody ever lived who knew the value of a life
And don't you think giving is all
What proves the worth of yours and mine

Every day is a gift you've been given
Make the most of the time every minute you're living

Scripting The Fray

Ever looked at the lyrics to the song: "You Found Me" by The Fray?  It is fun to piece together in your own way..

After reviewing the lyrics multiple times, I can only conclude the songwriter was drunk at the time of composition.

don't forget

If you find yourself in a better place,
you can't look down on the frown on the other guy's face.
You gotta stoop down low - look him square in the eye...

sixty four and a half

ever just sit and write what comes to mind? Ever just let things flow without even organizing it? Ever captured things even if they are just random numbers in your head - like the title of this entry?

neither have I.

'Right' theology, 'Wrong' theology, or 'My' theology

Theology is 'local'.

Tony Jones echos some of my sentiments about theology and beliefs/talk about God.

What does it mean to be local?
"As a human being who attempts to communicate with other human beings, all of my communication originates within me.  It's inescapable: what I say and how I say it, what I think and write, my facial expressions, and the clothes I wear are all iterations of me - of my mind and emotions and the rest of what it means to be 'me'."

What does this have to do with Theology?
"Theology, since it is a human enterprise, is no different from any of my other activities.  As my attempt to reflect on notions about God, theology is inherently local."

Can we know sure things about God?
"The God about whom we theologize is transcendent, but our human musings about God are not."

This is not new, we know this already regarding our past Theological figures.
"Dietrich Bonhoeffer's theology was shaped by Nazi Germany, Augustine's was formed by his neo-Platonic environs in northern Africa and the Roman Empire, and Martin Luther's was fashioned in a Roman Catholic monastery."

This is from a good book I recommend by Tony Jones: The New Christians: Dispatches from the Emergent Frontier (p. 112)
